What is the best teleprompter app for musicians?
The short answer: a teleprompter built for musicians shows chords with the lyrics, moves the words by listening to you sing or by tempo or pedal, runs a setlist, and works with no signal on stage. A video teleprompter does none of that. QMe Prompter was built by a working guitarist for exactly this job; here is how to judge any app, including ours.
Video teleprompters are the wrong tool
Most apps called "teleprompter" are for people reading a script to a camera: a plain text scroll at a fixed speed, mirrored for a glass rig. They have no idea what a chord is, they cannot hear you, and a fixed speed falls apart the moment a crowd wants a longer intro. Musicians who try them end up tapping the screen between every verse.
The other family is the chord chart app: OnSong, SongBook Pro and their relatives. They are excellent libraries, and some can auto-scroll, but the page is still something you read and swipe. What a performer wants sits between the two: a chart that moves itself, correctly, in the key you are playing.
The checklist
- Chords over lyrics, transposable. Not a PDF of a chart, a live chart that changes key with a tap and keeps the chords lined up with the words.
- More than one way to scroll. A scroll that follows your voice for songs you sing, a tempo scroll for songs with a steady groove, and a pedal or watch for everything else. One mode is never enough for a whole set.
- Setlists that run the show. Songs in order, sections you can jump to, the next song one swipe away, and the total running time before you agree to a two-hour slot.
- Works with no signal. Bars and churches have terrible Wi-Fi. Once songs are on the device, nothing should depend on the network.
- A way in for your existing songs. ChordPro files, PDFs, a photo of a chord sheet, a SongBook Pro backup, a Planning Center plan. Retyping a repertoire is how apps get abandoned.
- A keyboard somewhere. Typing 200 songs on an iPad is not fun. A web console you can use on a Mac or PC, syncing to the tablet, saves weeks.
- Band features you will actually use. Everyone following the same song, MIDI to switch your sounds per section, backing tracks locked to the words.
How QMe Prompter answers each one
Chords: chord charts over lyrics, ChordPro import, transpose to any key with a capo calculator, big text tuned for stage lighting.
Scrolling: Voice Follow listens to you sing and moves the words with you, in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German or Italian. Auto scroll rolls at the song's tempo. A Bluetooth pedal, a MIDI board or an Apple Watch steps the lines. You choose per song and the choice is remembered.
Setlists: sets within a setlist, a singer and colour per song, total run time, a swipe to the next song, and a file you can send to the rest of the band.
Offline: everything except the band sync works with the Wi-Fi off.
Importing: AZLyrics search inside the app, Ultimate Guitar as PDF, your own PDFs and photos with AI Clean Up, SongBook Pro backups with MIDI intact, and service plans straight from Planning Center.
Keyboard: the web console at qmeprompter.com edits the same library, and changes are on the iPad before you leave the house.
Band: Group Jam syncs the whole band over Wi-Fi, Local Follow syncs your own devices with no network, MIDI switches patches per song or section, and backing tracks or Apple Music play locked to the lyrics.
And the part nobody else does: the same words on Even Realities G2 smart glasses, or on XREAL, Viture, RayNeo and Rokid display glasses over a cable, so you look at the room instead of a stand.
Who it is for, and who it is not
QMe is for people who perform: singers, guitarists, keyboard players, cover bands, duos, worship teams, karaoke hosts. Reading a script to camera works too: QMe follows your speaking voice and records you with the script over your own picture, and the saved video is only you (see the guide for content creators). If you need sheet music with notation, look at a score reader. QMe is a lyrics and chords instrument for the stage.
What it costs
Free to download, with 30 days of full access and no card. After that the free plan keeps three songs, and Pro is a monthly or yearly subscription for unlimited songs and everything above. Current prices are on the home page.
Questions musicians ask
Is QMe Prompter a teleprompter or a chord chart app?
Both, which is the point. It is a chord chart that moves itself: the words scroll by following your voice, by tempo, or by pedal, with the chords staying lined up above them.
Does it work on Android?
The app is iPhone and iPad. Android bandmates can follow a session and read along in a browser at qmeprompter.com, and the web console works on any computer.
Can it follow me if I play guitar and sing at the same time?
Yes. Voice Follow listens for the words you sing, and the Instrument Filter helps it ignore the guitar. In a band, feeding the iPad a dry vocal send from the board makes it most accurate.
Do I have to retype my songs?
No. Import ChordPro files, PDFs, a photo of a chart, a SongBook Pro backup, or a Planning Center plan, and AI Clean Up turns rough imports into a proper chart.
